Abstract
Pneumoperitoneum was detected when using real-time ultrasound to evaluate four patients who had not undergone conventional radiographic examinations previously.
Ultrasonographic findings of pneumoperitoneum were as follows:
1. Pneumoperitoneum was detected best in the right upper quadrant abdomen with the right anterior oblique or left lateral decubitus position.
2. Pneumoperitoneum echo was overlapping with lung echo in inspiratory phase, but the former was separated from the latter in expiratory phase.
3. Floating air-bubbles were visible when ascites were existed.
4. Detection of the cause of pneumoperitoneum was possible in three cases.
